Newborn essentials: what you really need for the first 90 days

By Team Kitly · Pharmacist reviewed

Baby lists online are long, and many items never get used. Here is what most families actually need in the first three months.

Bath and skin

  • A mild baby wash. Newborns don't need a bath every day; 2–3 times a week is enough.
  • A gentle lotion for dry patches, and a massage oil if your family likes maalish.

Nappy area

  • A diaper rash cream. Use a thin layer at every change.
  • Water-based wipes for outings, and soft cotton nappies at home so the skin can breathe.

Health basics

  • A digital thermometer (not glass-mercury). For babies under 3 months, a temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or more needs a doctor straight away.
  • A nasal aspirator for a blocked nose, and a baby nail clipper.

Comfort

  • A light muslin swaddle, mittens, booties and a cap.
  • Two or three burp cloths for your shoulder.

What you can skip

  • Honey or ghutti: no honey before 1 year.
  • Kajal, and powder near the face.
  • Pillows, bumpers and soft toys in the cot. Keep sleep spaces empty.

Kitly Coral puts these essentials in one box, chosen by a pharmacist, with four care cards for the first 90 days.
