Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is rare, but a few simple habits lower the risk a lot. Doctors sum it up as ABC.
A: Alone
Baby sleeps in their own cot or crib. Sharing the room for the first 6 months is recommended, but not the same bed.
B: Back
Put baby down on their back for every sleep, day and night. Not on the tummy or side.
C: Clear
A firm, flat mattress with a fitted sheet, and nothing else: no pillows, quilts, bumpers or soft toys.
Other good habits
- Don't overheat. One light layer more than you wear is enough. Never cover the head.
- Keep the home smoke-free.
- Swaddle loosely at the hips, and stop once baby tries to roll.
- Tummy time is for awake time only, with an adult watching.
